How Does a Water Well Pump Work?
Many people go their entire lives without thinking about how they get their drinking water, especially if they live in a town or city. However, some individuals have to rely on wells to get their water supply, and a water well pump is essential. But how do they work? What kind of pumps are out there? Why should you care about them? The information below will help you dive into the world of water well pumps successfully.
What You Should Know About Shallow-Well Pumps
In this day and age, when you have a shallow well, you’re probably going to have a jet pump to go with it. A jet pump uses suction to draw water up from the well. It’s mounted just above the well, be it in a special well house or the inside of a home. When it really comes down to it, atmospheric pressure provides most of the work for this system because of the use of suction.
But how exactly does a jet pump create suction? It does it in a very interesting way. An electric motor powers the pump, and it uses an impeller to force the well water through a thin opening. Because the opening is so constricted, the water speeds up. A Venturi tube slows down the water while increasing the pressure. The end result involves water entering the plumbing system at a high pressure rate.
It’s important to note that shallow-well jet pumps need to be filled with water before they will work properly.
Common Features
No matter what name is assigned to your system, it probably has the same components of any other system. Pumps aren’t supposed to run every minute of the day. They don’t turn on whenever you get a glass of water or flush the toilet. You get consistent water pressure because the pump moves the water to a storage tank. This tank has an air bladder that compresses when the water comes in. The water moves through the plumbing system as a result of this pressure.
Now that know the basics behind a water well pump, make sure you have your water well pump inspected frequently by someone you trust. They will make sure it doesn’t break down and leave you without the water you need to function and survive.
